A Stanford researcher has found a link between your personality/mental state and how you post online restaurant reviews

We all know that online user reviews are indispensable to the restaurant industry, but now a team of Stanford researchers has found that they can actually do more than help or harm a restaurant’s reputation: How you write your reviews can actually reveal your inner self.
“Our results demonstrate that portraying the self, whether as well–educated, as a victim, or even as addicted to chocolate, is a key function of reviews and suggests the important role of online reviews in exploring social psychological variables,” wrote the Stanford research team, led by linguistics professor Dan Jurafsky.
In plain English, that means that the way we word our Yelp reviews reveals our inner personality and temperament. Negative reviews at expensive restaurants, for instance, were often very emotional and revealed that the review functions as a means of coping with “service–related trauma” with Yelp serving as almost a form of therapy. Positive reviews of cheaper restaurants found instances of addiction to fatty or sugary food and extremely high emotions, while positive reviews of expensive restaurants revealed “sensory pleasure.”
The team studied patterns in over 900,000 online reviews, and their results appeared in the April 7 issue of the journal First Monday.

“I hope this will be a research tool to help people make more educated decisions in dating," he added. "And as the site grows, I think hopefully it will make people better dates because the possibility of being reviewed is out there.”
Exrated is one of a growing number of sites that allow individuals to comment anonymously on others’ performance, personality and preferences. Honestly.com, an “online resource for building, managing and researching professional reputation,” allows colleagues to review their coworkers. College students can discuss their peers' sexual exploits and pledging plans on Blipdar, branded the “leading website for venting, sharing and being yourself,” or dish about their teachers on RateMyProfessors.com.
Yet Exrated is among the first to focus on something as intimate, and potentially incendiary, as romantic relationships, pushing the limits on privacy by pairing real names with any salacious details an ex anonymously chooses to share.
Reviewers fill out a two-page questionnaire that includes details on the type of relationship they had with the person (i.e. “occasional gallop” or “over six months”) tips for getting along with that individual and their take on what type of relationship he or she is “best suited for,” such as “arm candy,” “drinking buddy,” or “one night stand.” Exes are given an overall score, as well as more detailed rankings for traits like hygiene, intelligence, mojo and thoughtfulness.
Padazana maintains that the site has instituted safeguards against defamatory posts, including the ability to flag abusive posts and a 140-character limit on reviews.
“We’re encouraging people to be succinct so they don’t have the room to get into the dirty-nitty gritty of bad relationships,” Padazana said. “I plan on it being a place where people can’t air their dirty laundry but rather constructively discuss what happened in past relationships.”
But a quick tour of Exrated surfaced no shortage of acrimonious reviews.
“Bring your own Zoloft,” one user wrote of a woman. "Fun in bed, but absolute bonkers out of it. Everyone's conspiring against her, so she thinks (hey, like guys writing bad reviews about her!).”
"Sexy European? More boring Midwest," another said. “OK, she's from Paris, which already gives her hot points, but I've dated girls from Kansas more exciting than her. What's *yawn* in French?”
Though Exrated enables two exes who have rated the same person to connect online, the site does not allow people who have been reviewed to dispute their ratings or offer their side of the story, nor can users preemptively create profiles and invite others to rate them. An ex’s only recourse to combat a bad listing is to recruit a friend who’ll post something positive -- or anonymously rate themselves. Moreover, Exrated offers no guidelines on what it deems acceptable or abusive.
“This is not going to foster constructive discussion,” predicted Internet safety expert Sameer Hinduja, who is co-director of Cyberbullying Research Center. “The only way this site will go viral and get a larger userbase is if the content is salacious, related to sexual exploits, inflammatory, or controversial.”
Yet many exes have received top ratings and even flattering endorsements from their ex-lovers. One is described as a “sweetie” (albeit a finicky eater), while a “good guy” with a five-star rating is called a “very special person -- idealistic, creative, and someone who stands behind his word.”
Hinduja argued the site would be undone by its reliance on unsubstantiated, nameless reviews, pointing to the rise and fall of sites like Juicy Campus, a college gossip site that let users comment anonymously and shut down after less than two years.
“Other sites like this have been flashes in the pan,” he said. “People realize they can’t put stock in anonymous comments. It makes you assume you have something to hide if you won’t say something face to face.”
Will Exrated even get 15 minutes in the spotlight? A paltry number of ratings have been posted so far -- a search for reviews of men and women in New York turned up just 21 entries, including two this reporter created as a test -- and Exrated faces the same catch-22 all new social media sites confront: people will only use the service once enough other users are already using it.
Even Padazana has yet to post a review of his ex-girlfriend.

Facebook Likes can accurately reveal your personality, says study
Research from a Cambridge University study into online privacy on Facebook shows that what someone has liked on Facebook can be used to accurately outline a huge amount of personal information.
The study revealed that Facebook users are inadvertently exposing some of their most intimate secrets via the pages they have publically “liked” on the social media website.
Cambridge University researchers were able to correctly deduce a user’s IQ, race, sexuality, drug use, political views or personality traits only using a record of the subjects, people and brands a person had liked on Facebook, even if not publically visible.
Analysing 58,000 Facebook users in the US, the researchers devised an algorithm to determine different personality traits. Gay men were picked out 88 per cent of the time, drug use was deciphered correctly in 65 per cent of cases, and even whether a user’s parents had divorced before that user turned 21 was found out in 60 per cent of cases.
“The important point is that, on one hand, it is good that people’s behaviour is predictable because it means Facebook can suggest very good stories on your news feed,” said Michal Konsinski, the lead Cambridge University analyst working with Microsoft Research for the study. “But what is shocking is that you can predict your political views or your sexual orientation. This is something most people don’t realise you can do.”
The computer software used to predict the traits could be used by anyone with training in data analysis, meaning that the same information could be collected by more dangerous organisations.
“Everyone carries around their Facebook ‘likes’, their browsing history and their search history, trusting corporations that it will be used to predict their movies or music tastes. But if you ask about governments, I am not sure people would like them to predict things like religion or sexuality, especially in less peaceful or illiberal countries,” added Konsinski.
The findings could reignite concerns about how much private data can be collected by governments and private companies, especially via seemingly innocuous Facebook likes and online habits.
“I hope internet users will change their ways and choose products and services that respect their privacy. Companies like Microsoft and Facebook depend on users willing to use their service – but this is limited when it could to Facebook because 1 billion people use it.”
The academic added that online sites like Facebook or Google should be enforced to inform users that their private data could be gathered purely by their likes, using the same technology that suggests music, movies and apps.

You will be surprised to know that in Japan people are very fond of asking the blood type of other people because they truly believe in blood type personality theory. Japanese people use it as a tool to assess the potential of an employee and the compatibility of two people getting married.

People with A blood type are sensitive, cooperative, emotional, passionate and clever. They are very patient, loyal and love peace and thus do not like to get into a fight with anyone. But sometimes these people become overly sensitive. They do not like to break the rules set down by society and care about etiquette and social standards.
These people take their time to make decisions and are too organized in all spheres of life but cannot multitask. They like things neat and clean and at the right place, which is why many people with OCD fall into A blood type.
People with this blood type also get stressed easily and thus have a high level of cortisol (stress) hormone.
Common personality traits: Kind, shy, attentive, stubborn, polite, tensed, reliable, overly sensitive, perfectionist, responsible, timid, anxious, composed and reserved.

These people are complicated and can have dual personalities like they can be shy like A type as well as outgoing like B type. Also, these people are the rarest blood type in the world.
They are charming and make friends easily. There will never be a dull moment in a group of friends even if only one of them is AB blood type. They are poor at handling stress.

Several years ago, Sibill Schilter, a student at the University of Zurich, learned that her school was recruiting people to test whether a smartphone app could help someone change their personality traits. These are people’s patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and they’re commonly categorized as the “big five”: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism.
Curious to learn more about herself, Schilter signed up. Maybe, she thought, she was a little too agreeable. “I’m the person who always wants to please everyone a bit, and I can get better at saying no when I don’t want something,” Schilter says.
For decades, psychologists have debated whether these traits are fixed or changeable. The study that Schilter participated in was designed to test whether using an app daily for three months would be enough to create noticeable and lasting personality changes. Each participant chose one trait they wanted to increase or decrease. For instance, one goal could be to become more extraverted, which the researchers defined as being more sociable, having more energy for action, being less quiet, or taking the lead more often.
The app, called Peach (PErsonality coACH), works like a diary, a dashboard, and a text messaging channel rolled into one. On the dashboard, users can see an overview of their goal, a calendar that shows their progress, and their task for the week. For instance, someone who wants to be more conscientious may be assigned to do homework for one hour after coming home from classes. The app sends the user two push notifications every day to remind them, and if the user makes progress it will show up on the dashboard.
Users can also talk with a sort of digital coach, a chatbot also named “Peach,” about their daily activities. The chatbot might ask which task someone is working on or how stressed they are. Users can also opt to complete a daily diary, doing a self-assessment of those five main personality traits. (For example: “How would you describe yourself today—shy or outgoing?”)
In a study published in February in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences the researchers concluded that the app works. The study was conducted with 1,523 volunteers. Compared to the control group, the users who received the smartphone intervention showed more self-reported personality trait changes toward their goals. Overall, friends, family members, or intimate partners who volunteered to observe the participants also noticed the personality changes, with both self- and observer-reported changes persisting three months after the end of the study. Notably, the observer-reported changes were only significant among those who desired to enhance a trait, but not for those wanting to minimize one, suggesting it’s perhaps easier for others to observe when a person is enhancing a trait compared to getting rid of one.
Mirjam Stieger, the lead author on the study, describes the “high dosage” nature of the intervention—that users interacted with the app and the chatbot several times a day—as key to driving personality changes. “It’s the repetition that helps,” says Stieger, a postdoctoral fellow in the Lifespan Developmental Psychology Laboratory at Brandeis University.
Mathias Allemand, the principal investigator on the project, agrees, adding that other interventions people may try, like seeing a therapist or attending meditation sessions, typically are less intensive, occurring every week or two. He adds that the accessibility, convenience and variable nature of the app—like being able to have different conversations with the chatbot every day—made it appeal to participants. “You have the smartphone and [chatbot] coach in your pocket,” says Allemand, a professor of psychology at the University of Zurich.
“I really liked it—every week, you had a goal to pursue,” agrees Schilter. “You always have your smartphone, so there was less of a barrier.”
Still, she notes her adherence to the app’s instructions wasn’t always perfect. Some weeks Schilter fulfilled the task assigned to her, and some weeks she didn’t. For instance, she completed tasks like saying no if someone asked her for something that she didn’t really want to do, and writing down a list of things she wants to achieve or experience in the next five years. But she wasn’t able to complete a task about not letting anyone cut in front of her in line—because nobody tried to. (This was before Covid-19, when strangers got closer to one another.) Yet she says using the app did cause her to reflect on the times it had occurred in the past.
Allemand says that one way the app helps is by reminding people of the discrepancy between what they’re doing and what they want to achieve. If the user isn’t moving closer toward their goal—whether measured through self-assessments or completion of the weekly tasks—an icon on their dashboard will flash yellow (for no change) or red (if the change is in the opposite direction.) Just like receiving counseling, apps can supportively hold people accountable by keeping them on task and engaged.
Eventually, Schilter’s app notified her that she’d achieved her goal of being less agreeable: It gave her a green light on her dashboard and an encouraging message, along with a reminder to keep practicing the skill. “I am now better at standing up for my opinion or saying when I do not like something,” Schilter says. “Also, it feels more OK to be less agreeable in some situations.”
The friends who’d offered to be Schilter observers filled out three online surveys about her personality—one a week before she tried the app (as a pretest), one a week after the 10-week trial period (as a post-test), and another 12 weeks after that. After the study, they scored her as being better able to stand up for what she thought.
While some experts still hold the idea that personality is fixed, these days “the majority of experts believe that personality traits change across the life course,” says Brent Roberts, a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a coauthor on the study.
“People’s personality changes through maturation,” agrees Rodica Damian, an assistant professor of social psychology at the University of Houston, who was not involved in the study. “For instance, as we age, most people become more conscientious and agreeable, and less neurotic, to help cope with life.”
However, experts stress that someone has to want to change their personality because they are dissatisfied with certain situations or aspects of their lives. And ultimately, the change comes from the person. “It’s not the app that changes people. People change themselves,” Allemand says. “An app is a means to an end.”
As a study participant, Schilter feels the same way. “You have to want to change. You have to want to reflect on yourself. You need some time every day. It’s not much, but it’s still minutes of your daily life,” she says.
Damian says she was impressed by the study. “It’s very much evidence-based,” she says. “It has the potential to provide a more accessible intervention that can contribute to quick, personalized change” compared to other therapeutic approaches. That said, she points out, because the follow-up period was 12 weeks, “we don’t know yet how long-lasting the change is beyond that period.”
Stieger and Allemand hope to explore this question by looking at a subset of participants who will provide data after one year via a questionnaire. Additionally, the research team also collected data from the users’ smartphones—so-called digital footprints—including the number of phone calls and text messages they send and receive, and the number of nearby devices detected via Bluetooth. The researchers plan to examine whether metrics like sending a higher number of phone calls or texts are indicative of someone becoming more extraverted.
